Memorial Goddess Model at Merchistoun Hall
Nike will be in a place of prominence in the reception area at Merchistoun Hall, behind a perspex screen.
We have not removed Nike from her travelling crate yet …
… but I have peeked in through the bubble wrap and seen her head and am thrilled with what I have seen!
The Marquette is a a 1/3 sized model made from wood and clay that Rotherhams have produced for us to check that the detail is correct before the full size statue, made from Portland stone, is carved. We know that the raised arm is at the wrong angle, it should be more round to the right, pointing up towards Blendworth and that has been adjusted. The real arm will be made as a separate item as it is so slim and added to the statue when she is finished. Nike is also minus her inverted sword at this stage.
Rotherhams have painted her with yacht varnish to prevent her ‘drying out’ so that she could travel down to Horndean with minimal cracking. However there is a little cracking which is of no concern as Nike has already been digitally scanned ready for the the next phase of the restoration.
The completed stone statue will not be shiny!
Please come and see our Goddess, as far as we can tell she is unique. Most statues of the Goddess Nike show her with wings. When I was approaching Stonemasons at the start of this project I sent out pictures to illustrate the design we required and the comment I received was that no one had seen this design before. I have looked at hundreds of pictures of Nike statues throughout this process and there are none quite like ours and I think ours looks the best!
Please come and see and take the opportunity to comment on the Goddess Nike.
We are still some £10,000 short of our final total of £36,000 although we have some pledges left to receive and Morrisons have agreed to us holding a collection day in the store on Sunday June 15th.
